Frame the Chaos

Holi provides some of the most dynamic, vibrant, and emotionally charged photographic opportunities in the world. But it's also a hostile environment for sensitive camera equipment. Fine powder and water are the enemies of electronics.

Here is how you capture the magic safely.

1. Protect Your Gear (Non-Negotiable)

If you are using a DSLR or Mirrorless camera:

  • Zip-lock DIY: Cut a hole for your lens in a large ziplock bag and tape it securely around the lens hood with duct tape.
  • Rain Covers: Invest in an actual camera rain cover.
  • UV Filter: Put a cheap UV filter on your lens. It’s better to scratch a $10 filter than a $1000 lens.
  • Do not change lenses outdoors!

If you are using a smartphone, buy a robust, transparent waterproof pouch.

2. Freeze the Action

The most iconic Holi shots are the "powder explosions." To freeze this action, you need a fast shutter speed.

  • Settings: Put your camera on Shutter Priority (Tv/S mode) or Manual. Set the shutter speed to at least 1/800th or 1/1000th of a second.
  • If you're on a phone, use "Burst Mode" or "Action Mode" to capture 10-20 frames per second, then pick the best one.

3. Backlight the Powder

To make gulal (colored powder) look magical, shoot with the sun behind your subject (backlighting). When the powder is thrown into the air, the sunlight shines through the dust cloud, making the colors pop intensely.

4. Focus on the Eyes

Amidst a face covered in heavy pinks and greens, the white of the eyes pops incredibly well. Get close-up portraits focusing sharply on the subject's eyes. The contrast between the vibrant skin and clear eyes makes for stunning portraiture.

5. Get Up High (Or Down Low)

Change your perspective. Shoot from a balcony looking down on the crowd, or get low to the ground to make the powder throws look massive.

Pro Tip: Shoot in RAW format if possible. Holi creates highly saturated scenes, and shooting RAW gives you much more flexibility in editing to recover blown-out highlights or tweak colors.
